The challenges

Minecraft: Education Edition is a game-based learning platform that offers educators a unique way to engage students and ignite their passion for learning in subjects such as science, math, history, and more. There were two challenges for this project:

  1. The Classroom Poster: Create a poster that explains the basics of Minecraft: Education Edition that Minecraft Educators can hang in their classrooms.

  2. The Template Headers: Create new templates in Microsoft Word for the Minecraft: Education Edition Parent’s Guide for Lesson Plans and the Parent’s Toolkit. These guides would be sent to parents to inform them of what Minecraft: Education Edition is, what makes it special, and how it supports their child’s learning.

The process

I sketched a few options in the Minecraft style and collaborated with the art and education teams to select a creative direction. We moved forward with an isometric illustration style that still stays true to Minecraft while keeping the style unique to the Education Edition. This included adding in elements that illustrate the basics of how to play the game as well as some tips specific to the Minecraft: Education Edition.

The Classroom Poster

The final result

The Classroom Poster

The result was a fun, vibrant and informative poster in the Minecraft brand. There are elements used that are very easily recognizable to the brand, such as the main characters Alex and Steve, but also includes a diverse cast of NPC (Non-Player Characters) that are also commonly found in Minecraft. Specific Education Edition items are also featured, such as the camera, book and quill, and the Agent, an NPC that helps players learn to code.

The Template Headers

The toolkit concept illustrates Alex with a chest and a weapon (the tools she needs to survive) and the classroom concept has Steve teaching an NPC. The chalkboard behind him is a Minecraft: Education Edition exclusive block.

Created in collaboration with the art and Education teams at Minecraft.
